We don't do halloween. There, I said it. You may not agree with me or understand why and that's okay - I'm not here to push it on others, but I personally don't think that Christianity and halloween mix very well. I was inspired by Vicki's post yesterday and I couldn't have said it better. I am, in fact, puzzled by how many Christians do celebrate halloween... to celebrate a holiday glorifying death and fear directly conflicts the life and peace that Jesus teaches... but like I say, it's up to each one personally and although God has convicted me on it, I can't speak for the rest! So my kids will not be dressing up and going door-to-door tonight and they actually don't know the difference. I'm still muddling through the details because our kids are pretty young and we haven't really set a lot of traditions yet... I think it's fun for kids to dress up and knock on their friends' doors, but I think we'll try that another night!

Well, I for one am totally behind you! I think it's important to listen to what God wants us to do in our lives. That's the hardest thing to do sometimes when the rest of the world is saying it's ok not to. So, there are at least two of us here that don't celebrate :)

I so agree! I was so shocked to find Hallowe'en stuff in a "Christian" bookstore this week.
ReplyDeleteHi There! I was allowed to celebrate Halloween but only until I was about 6 and then my parents decided to not let my sister or I celebrate Halloween...sometimes they would even have us miss school on the day.
ReplyDeleteI think I was brought up with similar values as you but I actually really like the idea of dressing up.
I think the reason more Christians are celebrating it is because it's less of a holiday celebrating death and more of just an American holiday. I do not believe in making Halloween a day about witches or ghosts or things that are either evil or scary.
I choose not to think about where it originated from and instead focus on what it is today.
Our church also had a Harvest festival but to be honest it was never as fun as dressing up.
It's really sad to me that Halloween started in such a negative way but I intend to make Ocotber 31st something positive.
